Lets Learn Haikus!
Before we begin our Haiku lesson we need to review what a syllable is. A syllable is a part of a word pronounced as a unit. You look at the word and count how many vowel sounds that word makes. Don't just count the number of vowels because that is incorrect. You must focus on the vowel sounds. If you need some brushing up and practice with syllables take a look at the video below and Ronnie can help you out.
Now that we understand what syllables are. Lets focus on what a Haiku really is. "Haiku" is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme. When most people think about poetry they like to think everything rhymes, but with Haiku poems that is not the case. It is okay if the words don't rhyme. If you have trouble remembering the format of Haiku poems take a look at this Haiku example that can help you remember.
I am first with five
Then seven in the middle
Five again to end.
Because Haikus are such short poems, they are usually written about things such as animals and seasons because these are topics almost everyone is familiar with.
Now we are going to take a look at some examples of Haikus that can help you get some ideas in for your project I will discuss further in the lesson.

For this next example its okay to be a little silly, but lets not get out of control.

I like to eat them daily.
And then do big farts!
I have given you plenty of examples of Haikus and discussed their format. Now we will be discussing the two assignments that need to be completed. For the first assignment I want you to look at an item that is close to you. Look at the item, feel the item, get familiar with it. Pick out characteristics of the item. I want you to type up a Haiku poem about this item you became familiar with. I would like you to use a Word document using any font you would like just as long I am able to read it. Keep in mind the format of a Haiku. When you finish typing your Haiku I would like you to add some pictures that will go with the poem you typed up. You need to include at least two pictures to your poem or at least one big picture that is the background. Save your document and email it to me so I can assess your work. I provided a simple example of this assignment below of what I am looking for.
For the second assignment I would like you to complete an Animoto. First go to Animoto.com and get started. You will need to register for an account. Once you have registered you can play around with different backgrounds and music. When you are ready to create your Haiku click on the style you want to use and click the button that says create a 30 second video for free. I don't want you to have to pay for anything. You have free range how you would like your Animoto to look. Your Haiku must be your own work and have words throughout the clip. Be sure to save your video so you will be able to email me your clip when you are finished. Have fun and if you have any questions please email me and I will be happy to help you out.
If you need further help or would like to make sure your Haiku has the proper amount of syallables for each line this link can help you with that. http://writeahaiku.com/
If you are really stuck and cannot seem to think of anything, take a look at this worksheet to gather your thoughts. http://teacher.scholastic.com/scholasticnews/magazines/scope/pdfs/SCOPE-REPRO-102708-13.pdf
Both of these assignment are worth 10 points toward your grade. You will be awarded full points if you complete everything I ask for.
Below is an example of the first assignment as well as examples of Haiku Animotos I found on YouTube. Feel free to preview them so you can get an idea what I am looking for.
