Some people are unaware what assistive technology is. Assisitve technology is any tool that helps students with disabilities do things more quickly, easily or independently. Assistive technology provides supports, encouragement, pushes boundaries and helps kids grow to new and exciting places.
Assistive Technology must be considered for any student who is eligible for special education. In the IDEA law there are two components, a device component and a service component.
The device component is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability.
The service component is any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.
