In IDEA it is mandatory to consider assistive technology during the IEP process. We know about assistive technology to enhance mobility, communication, access to information, reading, writing, math, independent living. The factors that need to be considered for assistive technology for a student are the student, the student's environment, tasks they know, and tools they use. Team members must pool their respective
knowledge about each of the four SETT areas. The idea is to find the best match between student, environment, task and tools.Although cost should not be the determining factor when selecting an AT adaptation, decision makers should explore simple, reasonable, low-cost options when appropriate. lT training should include info on usage, care and maintenance, visual aids and step-by-step
instructions that can be left with the trainee. Find the answers to the questions on the SETT
form through observations, interviews, record checks, etc. You need to discuss all collected information with the AT/IEP team, make preliminary recommendations for specific AT in an Implementation Plan and put the plan in action, gather data and redo the plan if needed.
